Cinema Rediscovered film fest, Bristol, 25-28 July

February 20, 2019 12:12 pm

Returning for its fourth edition, Cinema Rediscovered celebrates great films back on the big screen. It’s an opportunity to discover – or indeed re-discover – some of the finest new digital restorations, contemporary classics and film print rarities from across the globe. We pride ourselves on creating a friendly space for all to share passions and enthusiasms for film and putting a spotlight on lesser known cinematic voices.

The festival is presented by Watershed and partners and takes place in Bristol, UK and the surrounding region between Thu 25 – Sun 28 July at venues including Watershed, 20th Century Flicks and Clevedon’s Curzon Cinema & Arts.

Film Critics’ Workshop 25th – 27th July, Bristol

Join critics including Michael Pattison (Sight & Sound, MUBI Notebook, RogerEbert.com), writer, critic and film historian Pamela Hutchinson (Sight & Sound, Guardian, author of BFI Film Classic Pandora’s Box and editor of 30-Second Cinema), author and activist So Mayer (Political Animals: The New Feminist Cinema, columnist at Literal, working with Raising Films and Club des Femmes) and writer and film critic for the Observer, Simran Hans (Sight & Sound, MUBI, 2015-2018 co-programmer for feminist screening series Bechdel Test Fest) for practical insights and a reflection on what it means to be a film critic today.

This FREE two-and-a-half-day talent development workshop is a unique opportunity for 10 writers, bloggers, video essayists/vloggers/podcasters in the early stages of their career to meet and discuss the future of film criticism while engaging directly with film culture and audiences during Cinema Rediscovered.

The film programme will focus on classic, repertory and archive film in a collective cinema setting. Successful participants will have the opportunity to submit written, aural or audio-visual works of a critical nature on films screened during the festival, for publication on a dedicated blog. Participants will also receive a full weekend Festival pass to attend film events at Cinema Rediscovered as well as annual membership to MUBI’s online viewing platform.

This workshop is suitable for aspiring and early career film critics with unique and creative approaches to a changing craft. Participants must be aged 18 or over. We are committed to inclusion and maintain an equal opportunities policy. We welcome applications from people of all backgrounds, particularly encouraging applications from candidates from BAME backgrounds who are currently under-represented within the sector. PLEASE NOTE: only successful applicants or those shortlisted will be notified.
