Non-UK nationals are eligible to apply to SWWDTP for both Student-Led and Collaborative Doctoral Awards.
SWWDTP awards cover tuition fees at an amount equivalent to that charged by consortium members for UK home students. International students may be charged higher international student fees by some consortium members. Other consortium members may waive or otherwise cover the difference between their home and international student fees. Each consortium member determines how it manages the difference between its home and international student fees. Please check the relevant funding pages of your chosen home institution for its policy on how it manages this difference. The difference between home and international student fees cannot be covered by SWWDTP awards.
EU nationals are now regarded as international students and are therefore liable for international student PhD tuition fees.
SWWDTP Awards cannot be used to support distance learning. All SWWDTP-funded students must be resident in the UK for the duration of their funded period.
If you receive an award, any international research travel and/or placement activities you undertake must be compliant with the terms of your visa. You should take this into account when planning your research project and application for SWWDTP funding. The international office at your prospective home institution should be able to offer advice on this.
Please ensure you are aware of any additional costs that coming to the UK as an international student may involve. Additional costs such as travel costs, visa and medical fees and other costs associated with moving to the UK to study are not covered by the SWWDTP studentship. The international office at your prospective home institution should be able to offer further information on additional costs that may be incurred. We also recommend you research rental and other associated living costs in your prospective home institution’s city, so you can assess their affordability to you.
